Forsyth County Public Library - serving Forsyth County since 1906

Wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet Access at the Library

What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity), is computer networking technology that uses high frequency radio signals to exchange information between a personal computer and the Internet. Through a Wi-Fi “hot spot,” your laptop computer can connect to the Internet without wires.

Locations
WiFi access is available at all 10 library locations. Currently at Central Library, the Wi-Fi "hot spot" is located on the First Floor in Coffee Central. At branches, Wi-Fi is available in each building.

Is there a charge for using the Library’s Wi-Fi?
No. Forsyth County MIS and the Forsyth County Public Library System provide this service free of charge for library customers. You must provide your own equipment, wireless card, and software.

Can I print while connected to the Library’s Wi-Fi?
No. Printing is not available from the wireless network.

Is the network secure?
The Library’s wireless network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the necessary software. We encourage you to observe standard security practices regarding passwords and credit card numbers. The Library is not responsible for any losses due to the use of its network.

What do I need to use Wi-Fi?
You need a laptop or notebook computer, or a personal digital assistant (PDA), equipped with a standard Internet browser and a Wi-Fi capable (802.11b) wireless network card. Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless network cards are available from most major electronics stores.

Traditional dial-up modems will not work with Wi-Fi.

How do I connect to the Library’s Wi-Fi?
Many newer laptops have Wi-Fi capability built-in. A computer running Windows XP will automatically alert the user to the presence of a Wi-Fi network when detected, and in most cases will automatically connect to the network. If your Wi-Fi-ready computer does not detect the network, you will need to follow a few simple steps in order to be connected.

Other computers and devices may require some configuration. Staff can provide limited basic assistance but cannot troubleshoot complex networking issues. For more information on wireless internet service throughout the library system, call 703-3008.
